Day 1: Marrakech to Tiziane via Imi Oughlad and Tizi N’tachte

Day 1 of our thrilling 5-day Toubkal summit and Toubkal trek begins with an early morning departure from Marrakech. As we embark on this remarkable adventure, we journey southward, following a scenic route that winds through the mesmerizing Moulay Brahim gorge, ascending to the higher foothills of the Western High Atlas Mountains.

Our trailhead at Imi Oughlad unveils a captivating landscape, where prominent peaks like Jbel Toubkal (North Africa’s highest at 4167m), Aglzim (3650m), and Aksoual (3847m) dominate the horizon. With these majestic heights before us, we leave our vehicle behind and gather with our expert guides and the experienced Berber muleteer crew.

Selected for their extensive local knowledge, our guides enhance the trek through Toubkal National Park, bringing a sense of excitement and enriching our exploration of the Berber villages that dot the mountains.

To acclimatize, we embark on a 2-hour hike northeast, gradually ascending before transitioning to mule tracks. Enveloped by the beauty of the surroundings, we traverse barley corn fields and navigate through a forest adorned with pine and juniper trees until we reach Tiz n’Tachete (2000m). Here, we pause to marvel at the breathtaking vistas, gazing down upon the picturesque valleys of Imlil and Ait Oussaden, where Berber villages gracefully cling to the mountainside.

Continuing our trek, we venture onward for another half an hour, reaching Imi n’Ifri, a plateau where we indulge in a delightful picnic, nourishing both body and soul.

Following a gentle descent of approximately two and a half hours along a dirt track, we make our way southwest, traversing the enchanting Assif n’Ait Oussaden until we arrive at the ancient terraced village of Tiziane (1750m). Here, in the embrace of traditional Berber hospitality, we find respite in a guest house, preparing for the next stage of our thrilling expedition.

Day 2:Tizziane to T’kint via Tizi N’taghrhourte

We kick off our second day with a nourishing breakfast before commencing our hike. The journey begins with a gentle ascent, gradually making our way up the Assif n’Ait Oussaden Valley. As we traverse this picturesque landscape, we find ourselves surrounded by thriving walnut groves.

Ascending further, we reach the impressive Tizi N’taghrhourte at an elevation of 1995m. From this vantage point, a breathtaking panoramic vista unfolds, treating us to awe-inspiring views of the majestic mountains and captivating landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. This is the perfect opportunity to pause, soak in the beauty of nature, and indulge in a tranquil field picnic, savoring the serenity of the wilderness.

In the afternoon, our descent along the forest’s edges offers a serene and contemplative journey. We continue until we arrive at the charming Berber village of D’knt (1870m) or Agouns n’Assoul, where we will be greeted with warm hospitality. Here, we settle into a guest house, where a delicious dinner awaits, providing us with the opportunity to rejuvenate and rest, preparing for the adventures that lie ahead.

Day 3:T’knt to Azib Tamsoult Hut via Tizi N’tagdalte

With an early breakfast energizing us, we embark on a 3-hour morning hike. Our path leads us upward, winding through picturesque groves of walnut trees and fields of corn, immersing us in the tranquility of nature.

As we journey, we may encounter sheep and goat herders, witnessing their traditional way of life in this rugged terrain. The ascent continues until we reach the remarkable Tizi n’Tagdalte, a mountain pass that rewards us with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

Descending from the pass, we make our way through enchanting juniper trees until we arrive at a serene spring nestled among the foliage. Here, we pause to enjoy a delightful field picnic, replenishing our energy in the midst of nature’s beauty.

Feeling refreshed, we continue our trek along winding tracks that traverse the upper slopes, gradually descending for approximately 3 hours. Along the way, we encounter a small river, marking the beginning of the Assif n’Ait Oussaden valley. As we navigate the winding paths, we arrive at the village of Tizi Oussem (1850m), where we have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture and hospitality.

From Tizi Oussem, our journey ascends to the summer village of Tamsoult, nestled amidst the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Atlas Mountains. Here, we find accommodation in a traditional local hut, providing a unique and authentic experience.

Day 4:Azib Tamsoult Hut to Toubkal Hut via Tizi Aguelzim

As the sun rises, we indulge in a satisfying breakfast, preparing ourselves for another day of adventure. Our journey takes us eastward, following winding mule tracks that lead us to the challenging ascent of Tizi Aguelzim (3550m).

With determination and perseverance, we conquer this moderately difficult section of the trail, rewarded with awe-inspiring views that stretch as far as the eye can see. The panoramic vistas captivate our senses, reminding us of the immense beauty that surrounds us.

Continuing our trek, we embark on a three-hour hike, heading southeast towards the Toubkal Refuge. This refuge serves as a pivotal point, marking the spring snowline at an elevation of 3207m. Here, we find respite and sustenance, enjoying a well-deserved dinner that replenishes our energy for the challenges that lie ahead.

The Toubkal Hut becomes our home for the night, offering a cozy and welcoming atmosphere amidst the rugged mountain landscape. Surrounded by the natural wonders of the High Atlas, we settle in for a restful overnight stay, preparing ourselves for the thrilling culmination of our Toubkal summit and Toubkal trek.

Day 5:Toubkal Hut to Jbel Toubkal Summit, Imlil, and Marrakech

As the dawn breaks, we rise early, motivated by our eagerness to conquer the Toubkal Mount while the sun’s heat is still gentle. With determination in our hearts, we embark on a three-hour steep climb that leads us to the pinnacle of North Africa’s highest peak, standing proudly at 4167m.

Reaching the summit of Jbel Toubkal is a moment of triumph and awe. The breathtaking panorama that unfolds before us is a testament to the grandeur of nature’s creation. Every step, every physical effort becomes insignificant as we are rewarded with awe-inspiring views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

When you feel ready, we will commence our descent, following the Ikkhibi Sud or South Cirque trail. Your experienced guide will lead the way, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey. The descent will take approximately two to three hours, guiding us back to the Toubkal Hut, where we will pause for a well-deserved picnic.

Refreshed and invigorated, our journey continues towards the north, descending along steep and winding trails that trace the higher slopes of the Valley of the Assif N’isougane N’ouagounss. As we make our way, we will encounter the Shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, a sacred site nestled beside a cascading waterfall. This pilgrimage shrine holds cultural significance, though access is restricted to non-Muslims.

The descent continues for another two hours, leading us to the enchanting village of Imlil. It is from this picturesque village that many treks embark, marking the end of our Toubkal summit and Toubkal trek adventure. With cherished memories and a sense of accomplishment, we bid farewell to the mountains and board our transportation back to Marrakech.
